Ben Nieuwkerk is a versatile musician and educator. Over the course of his career, Ben has been the musical director of the Low Down Big Band, A Guy and A Gal and the High Street Screamers, and a member of many ensembles including Copperhead Brass Band and the ishs/Allen Project. This has led to performances at some of Australia’s most reknowned festivals including the Melbourne International Jazz Festival in 2011, Falls Festival in 2015 and 2017, the Wangaratta Jazz Festival 2016, the Castlemaine Jazz Festival and the Melbourne International Saxophone Festival in 2018, and at MONA Tasmania in 2019.
Ben has been heavily influenced by his many teachers and mentors including Steve Sedergreen, Tony Hicks and Dr Brigid Burke all of whom have cultivated a love for expression and improvisation.
As an Educator, Ben has taught in many amazing school music programs. In this time, his students have been awarded first place in the ClaSax Ensembles Competition Junior divison, first place in the Generations in Jazz Division 3.1, and achieved outstanding results at the Victorian Schools Music Festival.
These educational achievements are a result of a meticulous approach to education which emphasises instrumental technique, musical skill and the ability to motivate students to strive for excellence. Ben has been a guest conductor and tutor for many school and community groups wishing to enhance their ensembles’ performances as they prepare for festivals and competitions.
